The Archive of Secrets

The Archive of Secrets
Records from Both Sides
Johnny Kleintjes helps combine intelligence systems inherited from the former regime and the liberation movement. The data includes informants, operations, political vulnerabilities, and records of concealed violence.
Backup as Insurance
When sensitive files begin disappearing, Johnny makes backups and takes some material home. The archive becomes a form of leverage and protection, but it also leaves him responsible for dangerous secrets years later.
A Daughter’s Assignment

A Daughter’s Assignment
A Father Under Threat
Monica is told to retrieve a disk from her father’s safe and bring it to Lusaka within seventy-two hours. The callers threaten Johnny’s life to force her cooperation.
Choosing a Courier
Monica seeks Thobela because Johnny named him as someone he trusted. Her choice relies on an old relationship she barely understands, and it places the disk in the hands of a man who will not abandon a comrade.
The Agency’s Counterplan

The Agency’s Counterplan
A Disk They Want Back
Mentz assumes that the disk contains sensitive data and tries to take it from Thobela before he reaches the airport. Her team wants to control the delivery rather than let the courier or his contacts determine what happens.
A False Sense of Possession
The authorities do not yet know whether Johnny gave Thobela the original archive or material prepared for the operation. The disk is treated as both evidence and threat, although its actual contents remain uncertain.
Bullets Destroy the Data

Bullets Destroy the Data
Damage in the Luggage Case
In a hotel room, Thobela discovers that bullets have passed through the luggage case and struck the hard disk. The device is destroyed, leaving him unable to deliver its data as intended.
A Secret Remains
The destruction does not resolve the crisis. No one can be sure what copies exist, who already knows the information, or whether the disk was the original archive at all.
An Unresolved Safe Disk

An Unresolved Safe Disk
A Claim of Security
At the Waterfront, Thobela says the hard disk is safe but not in the authorities’ possession. A street hawker relays the message to a driver, showing that information can travel through ordinary, concealed channels.
The Open Question
The ending never establishes precisely where the disk is or what it contains. Its uncertain status preserves the larger political threat beyond Thobela’s personal escape.
